Archaeological museum Messenia, Kalamata
cave of Demiova, Elaiochori, Messenia
Height: 21.4 cm
Terracotta female figurine. It wears a polos (hat) and a peplos, with clearly delineated folds and a deep fold under the breasts. The facial features are rather faint, except for the nose. The figurine has a four-sided base, hollow in the inside, while the rear side is rough. It was handed to the Archaeological service, along with other figurines, found in a cave in the area of Demiova monastery, near the village of Elaiochori, east of Kalamata. The finds indicate the existence of a cult of a female deity. The sanctuary possibly belonged to ancient Kalamai, located in the broader region of present day villages Elaiochori and Perivolakia.
