Archaeological museum Messenia, Kalamata
Karpophora, Messenia
Height: 23.8 cm
Red-figure pelike. The entire outer surface, the rim and neck interior are covered by a lustrous black glaze. The figures are reserved on both sides of the vessel. On one side a scene with three figures: A naked seated male turns to his left, towards a female. One more male is depicted in front of the central figure, with only the feet, hand and part of the head preserved. On the other side, two facing male figures wearing a himation. Both scenes are bordered by a lesbian cymation, above and below. The same motif is repeated on the rim perimeter. Found in chamber tomb with offerings of the geometric and classical period near Karpophora, not far from the prehistoric settlement at Nichoria.
