Middle Helladic tumulus 2, Kastroulia, Ampheia
Height: 28.6 cm
Jug with cut-away neck and a globula body. Vertical handle with a deep central groove. Matt-painted decoration with dark brown paint, preserved in about half of the vessel's surface. A triple band on the rim, a quintuple one around the base of the neck and a double band around the vessel's base. The body is decorated with a series of triangles, the central one hatched. Found in a female burial of the Middle Helladic tumulus 2 at Kastroulia, Ampheia, next to the Ellinika ridge with the mycenaean chamber tomb cemetery and the acropolis of classical Thouria. The female burial in tumulus 2 was accompanied by an assemblage of domestic food and drink vessels. The two tumuli at Kastroulia reflect the existence of a hierarchicaly structured society in this part of Messenia, as early as the early Middle Helladic period. The notable Minoan influence on some of the ceramic vessels could mean that these were artefacts of high value and status.
