Piriform jar
1520 CE – 1450 BCE
Koukounara, Gouvalari, tholos tomb 1, Messenia
Height: 66 cm
Piriform jar from the mycenaean tholos tomb 1 at Koukounara, Gouvalari. Decorated with floral patterns of rosette motifs, their leaves filled with diaper net, creating a racquet motif. One of the most extensive mycenaean tholos tomb cemeteries of the Aegean world has been found at Koukounara. The finds indicate the existence here of a flourishing local ruling site during the early mycenaean period, which was later incorporated in the kingdom of Pylos, with its administrative centre at the palace of Nestor in Ano Englianos.
