Male statue
White marbleLength: 55 cm Height: 67 cm
Marble torso of a statue, possibly a rider, from the Asclepieion of ancient Messene. Preserved from the neck to the hips. Only the upper part of the arms is preserved. The torso wears a girded chiton and a himation, buckled at the right shoulder and covering most of the back; it must have covered the head as well, as shown by the surviving folds at the upper back side. Sockets for the attachment of metal joints are preserved high, at the border of the himation, above the girt. Three sockets are also visible around the buckle. 2nd-1st cent. BCE.
