Head of a colossal marble statue of a young male, from the Asclepieion of ancient Messene. The back of the cranium is cut obliquely and the cut-off surface is coarsely worked. Large, sunken-in eyes, with protruding eye brows. Fleshy, rounded cheeks and chin, small mouth. Bulging eye-brow arches. The hair consists of vigorous curls. This is possibly a depiction of Theban Heracles of the 2nd cent. BCE, attributed to the workshop of Damophon.
